Courtney Pine
Courtney Pine CBE (* 18th March 1964 in London ) is an English jazz - saxophonist . His main instruments are soprano and tenor saxophone , but especially on the younger recordings he can be heard on the entire saxophone family as well as on clarinet , bass clarinet , flutes and keyboard .
Live and act
Courtney Pine caused a sensation in the London jazz scene with the release of his debut album Journey to the Urge Within . Courtney Pine reaches a large following with his energetic game. One of his specialties is circular breathing , a breathing technique in which breathing occurs during the game without the sound breaking off. He himself mentions Sonny Rollins as a role model , but you can also see influences from John Coltrane on his album Modern Day Jazz Stories .
Pine first became known in Central Europe on tours of Harry Beckett and Chris McGregor . He is not a purist, but a flexible musician who successfully merges traditional jazz playing with contemporary styles such as drum and bass and garage house . In addition to the classic band, DJs and sound programmers can also be found on stage at his concerts. On the subject of purism, Courtney Pine said at a 1998 concert in Nijmegen, the Netherlands: "This is 1998, not 1948, that's why we play jazz the way you make music in 1998 and no longer like it was in 1948."
Nevertheless, Courtney Pines' early records (as with many young saxophonists) are firmly anchored in the mainstream style of playing and the repertoire consists largely of jazz standards. A clear upheaval can be seen with Modern Day Jazz Stories . This is where DJs , MCs , and extensive sampling and other electronic techniques are used for the first time . The later recordings of Pines (and remixes of them) can also be heard in the clubs. Pine can also be heard as a guest on jazz fusion projects such as Jazzmatazz .
Courtney Pine received an honorary doctorate from the University of Westminster in 2004 and another from the University of Southampton in 2010 .
