Craig Handy (* 25. September 1962 in Oakland , California ) is an American tenor saxophonist of the modern jazz .

Live and act

His stylistic spectrum ranges from bebop to advanced postbop . He attended North Texas State University from 1981–1984 and played with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , Wynton Marsalis , Roy Haynes and Abdullah Ibrahim . He recorded with Elvin Jones and Betty Carter , among others . He was a member of the Mingus Big Band ( Gunslinging Birds 1994) and the Mingus Dynasty .

Handy released on the Arabesque label in 1991 and 1993. His free improvisation experiments in the classical line-up of tenor saxophone, double bass and drums on the 1993 recording are gentler than comparable ones by Joe Henderson or David Murray and, thanks to the collaboration of Charles Fambrough, well structured. In 1996 he played the role of Coleman Hawkins in the film Kansas City . Since 2007 he has been working with the all-star formation The Cookers . Currently (2019) he leads the quintet, which includes Ibanda Ruhumbika (trombone), Matt Chertkoff (guitar), Kyle Koehler (organ) and Jerome Jennings (drums), and he also plays in the bands of Brandi Disterheft , David Weiss and Santi DeBriano .
