Brandi Disterheft

Brandi Disterheft (* 1980 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( double bass , composition , also vocals ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Disterheft grew up in North Vancouver , where she attended Handsworth Secondary School . During her school days, she performed with her mother, a Chicago jazz organist and pianist. After graduation, she received a scholarship to study at Humber College in Toronto, where she had lessons with Don Thompson . Disterheft also studied with Rufus Reid , Rodney Whitaker and Oscar Peterson .

Recordings have been made with Greg de Denus since the early 2000s, and later with Hank Jones , Renee Rosnes and Vincent Herring . In 2006 she recorded her first album Debut (partly with guest musician David Virelles ) ; it won the Juno Award for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year. In 2010 Disterheft moved to New York City, where she played in jam sessions (including the Smoke ) and studied with Ron Carter . During this time her third album Gratitude (2012) was created, with Sean Jones , Vincent Herring, Anne Drummond , Renee Rosnes and Gregory Hutchinson . She also presented the album as a singer. On their fourth album BlueCanvas worked Harold Mabern and Joe Farnsworth with. In the field of jazz, she was involved in 33 recording sessions between 2003 and 2015. In 2019 Disterheft also led a quartet that included Craig Handy , Alex Minasian (piano) and Carmine Intorre (drums).
