Gregory Hutchinson (* 16th June 1970 in Brooklyn , New York) is an American drummer of modern jazz . His highly differentiated, "lively" game reminds loud Martin Kunzler of Roy Haynes and Philly Joe Jones . According to Jazz Magazine , he is "the drummer of his generation".

Live and act

Hutchinson, whose father is a percussionist , started playing drums when he was three years old. After teaching with Justin Diccicio, he studied percussion at the Conservatory in his hometown and at the Manhattan School of Music . 1989/90 he played in the band of Red Rodney . He then accompanied Betty Carter ( The Music Never Stops ) until 1992 and then drummer with Roy Hargrove until 1995 . He also worked with Lou Donaldson , Von Freeman and John Scofield . In 1995 he became a member of Ray Brown's trio , with whom he toured worldwide. From 2001 he intensified his collaboration with Joshua Redman , to hear a. a. on Come What May (Nonesuch, 2019). He also played with Dianne Reeves , Wynton Marsalis , Charles Lloyd , Diana Krall , Harry Connick junior and Maria Schneider .

He has also been involved in recordings by Joe Henderson ( Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn , 1991), Andy LaVerne , Frank Wess , Antonio Hart , LaVerne Butler , Eric Reed , Jane Monheit , Christian McBride , Johnny Griffin , Rodney Whitaker , Benny Green , Peter Bernstein , Najponk , Kinga Głyk , Steve Wilson and Beegie Adair .
