Jane Monheit

Jane Monheit (born November 3, 1977 in Oakdale , Long Island , New York ) is an American jazz singer . In the early 2000s she was considered one of the most hopeful young singers in this genre.

biography

Monheit comes from a musical family and her school promoted her musical education with a special training program. In her youth she listened to classical , jazz, bluegrass and folk and studied clarinet and music theory. While she was still in high school, she began performing in clubs on Long Island and oriented herself towards jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald , Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae . At the age of 20 she took second place in the renowned Thelonious Monk competition in New York . The jury consisted of high-class artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater , Diana Krall and Dianne Reeves . The judges praised Monheit's refreshing naturalness, the warmth of her voice and the swinging phrasing of her singing. This is where the resemblance to Fitzgerald was particularly evident.

Monheit made her debut with musicians such as Kenny Barron , Ron Carter and Lewis Nash : Never Never Land (2000). For her third CD In The Sun (2002) the singer finally found a permanent quartet, with whom she also opened the final evening of the JazzBaltica Festival 2003. The album Taking a Chance on Love (2004) climbed to number one on the US jazz charts and cracked the top 100 of the pop charts for the first time for the singer . In the same year she performed celebrated at the Leverkusen Jazz Days . These are also an internationally important jazz festival. In 2005 she released her first Christmas album Season , for which she signed with the Epic label . Surrender followed in 2007 .
