LaVerne Butler
LaVerne Butler (born February 25, 1962 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz singer .
Live and act
LaVerne Butler, who is influenced by Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan , grew up in Shreveport , Louisiana and moved to New Orleans to study music at the University of New Orleans ; she also appeared in Dixieland and bebop venues in the city. Butler worked a. a. with Alvin Batiste , Ellis Marsalis , Henry Butler (to whom she is not related), and James Black . In 1992 she presented her debut album No Looking Back on Chesky Records , with Joe Henderson as a guest musician. In 1994 she moved to New York, studied with Jon Hendricks and worked full-time as an English teacher; she also performed in Manhattan jazz clubs. On her album Foolish Thing to Do ( Maxjazz , 2001) she was accompanied by Bruce Barth , Darryl Hall , Victor Lewis , David Fathead Newman , Steve Wilson and Terell Stafford . In 2012 the album Love Lost and Found Again (HighNote) was released under the musical direction of Bruce Barth and with saxophonist Houston Person .
