Henry Butler (* 21st September 1949 in New Orleans , Louisiana ; † 2. July 2018 in New York City , New York ) was an American jazz - and blues - pianist . The African American, who was blind from birth due to glaucoma, was nominated several times for the Handy Award for “Best Blues Instrumentalist - Piano”. In 2001 he received the Living Blues Award for best keyboard player.

Life

Butler started playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned drums, saxophone and trombone . At the age of 14 he played as a professional in the clubs in Baton Rouge . While studying singing, he received a scholarship that allowed him to study with George Duke and Cannonball Adderley .

Although Butler lived temporarily in Los Angeles and New York City , he kept returning to New Orleans . In 1986 his first album Fivin 'Around was released . In 2000 he worked with Corey Harris on the album Vu-Du Menz . He co- directed a Hot 9 with Steven Bernstein , with whom he appeared in Robert Altman's 1998 film Kansas City , which also includes Peter Apfelbaum , Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley . Butler died mid-2018, the consequences of cancer .
