Corey Harris

Corey Harris (born February 21, 1969 in Denver , Colorado ) is an American blues and reggae guitarist, singer and songwriter.

As a student, Harris played the guitar in a rock and roll band. In Maine , he earned a degree in anthropology . He then studied African languages in Cameroon and was enthusiastic about original African music.

He worked as a language teacher in Louisiana and made music in nearby New Orleans in his spare time . In 1995 his first album Between Midnight and Day was released , which was enthusiastically received.

In 1998 Harris worked with Billy Bragg and Wilco on the album Mermaid Avenue . In 2000 he began to work with the pianist Henry Butler - the result was the album Vü Dü Menz .

In 2003 Harris recorded the album Mississippi to Mali with Bobby Rush , Sam Carr and Shardé Thomas , the 12-year-old granddaughter of Othar Turner , and the "Rising Star Fife and Drum Band" .

In Martin Scorsese's film Feel Like Going Home (2003) , Harris visits the African musician Ali Farka Touré in Mali - the American blues meets its African roots.

Awards

Harris holds honorary degrees from Bates College and was a MacArthur Fellow in 2007 .
