At the age of seven, his father took him to performances, where he danced during the breaks. After moving to Helena, the place where his father lived, he became a bouncer and also played bass in his father's group.

At the age of 20 he married Doris and became a tenant farmer . After a dispute with the manager, the young couple moved to Chicago . He also formed his first band, Little Sam Carr and the Blue Kings , in which Early Bea, the wife of Robert Nighthawk, played drums before Carr switched to this instrument.

From 1956 on he played regularly with Frank Frost. Together with guitarist Big Jack Johnson , the three formed the Jelly Roll Kings . Their collaboration lasted until Frost's death in 1999. Carr then played with various Arkansas artists and was the leader of his Delta Jukes . His last appearance was in 2009 at the Mother's Best Festival in Helena, Arkansas.
