Frank Otis Frost (* 15. April 1936 in Auvergne, Arkansas ; † 12. October 1999 in Helena , Arkansas) was an American Delta blues - harmonica player .

Life

He was born Frank Otis Frost in Auvergne in 1936 to Theodore and Darthula Frost. His family was very musical, his father played the horn and his mother the piano . He learned to play the piano in the church where his parents played.

In 1951 he moved to St. Louis , where he learned the blues harmonica from Little Willie Foster and later from Sonny Boy Williamson II , who took him on tour as a guitar player between 1956 and 1959. Williamson considered him some kind of son. Here he played with Sam Carr , the son of Robert Nighthawk , with whom he was closely related all his life. A hand injury forced him to concentrate on playing the harmonica and the piano.

After separating from Williamson in 1959, he formed a duo with Sam Carr, to which guitarist Jack Johnson joined in 1962. They played in local blues clubs and also in King Biscuit Time , a blues show from Helena, hosted by Sonny Boy Williamson.

From 1963 he went on tour with various musicians, for example Albert King , BBKing , Carl Perkins and Conway Twitty . His own group caught the attention of Sam Phillips , the owner of Sun Records , who wrote the record Hey Boss Man! With them on the International sub-label . recorded! Frank Frost didn't have good memories of Phillips, so he said in an interview with Blues Acces: “We recorded it, and all he offered me was $ 800. That's all. We didn't come out with it. Then it came out later, and I didn't get paid. "

Frost's next recordings for Juwel Records were produced by Elvis Presley's guitarist Scotty Moore . In the late 1970s he was rediscovered by Chicago blues fan Michael Frank, who recorded albums with him for Earwig Records, which he founded. The albums appeared under the group name The Jelly Roll Kings.

Frost has appeared in the films Deep Blues: A Musical Pilgrimage to the Crossroads , a documentary about the Delta Blues, and in Crossroads , a feature film in which he played a musician in a juke joint . He also appeared in an advertising trailer for President Bill Clinton .

Frank Frost died of cardiac arrest on October 12, 1999 at his home in Helena, Arkansas.
