Juke joint

A juke joint , sometimes also spelled Jook Joint , short form Juke , was a simple pub for Afro-Americans in the rural southeast of the USA , in the alcohol , dance music and food , sometimes also gambling and prostitution were offered. It was also Barrelhouse , named after the barrels in which the ausgeschenkte alcohol was stored.

In contrast, Honky Tonk is a corresponding pub for whites . Some juke joints still exist today.

Juke joints played an essential role in the creation of the blues in the early 20th century , as the first blues musicians often performed there.

The word juke is likely of African origin and was used in the creole language Gullah , where it meant 'bad, bad, wicked'. This gave rise to the English word juke in the meaning described above, which was first used in Florida and then throughout the southeast of the States.
