Conway Twitty
Conway Twitty (* 1. September 1933 as Harold Jenkins in Friars Point , Mississippi ; † 5. June 1993 in Springfield , Missouri ) was a US -American rock 'n' roll - and country singer .
Life
He was born Harold Jenkins in 1933 in the small town of Friars Point, Mississippi . When he was ten years old, his family moved to Helena , Arkansas . There he put together his first band, the Phillips County Ramblers. Two years later, he had his own show on the local radio every Saturday morning. During his time in Arkansas he also played a lot of baseball and got an offer from the Philadelphia Phillies after high school , but he turned it down. Instead, he went to the army.
Twitty died of an aneurysm in 1993 at the age of 59 .
Career
After his discharge from the military, Twitty focused on his music career. Inspired by Elvis Presley's Mystery Train , he began writing rock and roll pieces and went to Sun Records in Memphis , where he worked with artists such as Carl Perkins , Jerry Lee Lewis , Johnny Cash and many others. In 1957 he adopted the stage name Conway Twitty , which is composed of the names of two cities in Arkansas and Texas .
He had his first success with It's Only Make Believe , a teenage ballad he recorded for MGM in 1958 . Eight years later and three gold records later, he began his country career, and by the early 1970s he had four number 1 hits, including Hello Darlin .
In 1971, Twitty had his first duet hit with Loretta Lynn, After the Fire Is Gone . This was followed in the same year by Lead Me On , two years later Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man and 1974 As Soon As I Hang Up the Phone . As a duo, Lynn and Twitty won the CMA Award four times in a row from 1972 to 1975 , an award that Twitty was denied in his solo career. In 1981, at the end of his contract with MCA , he was able to look back on 32 number 1 hits and another 15 hit parade listings in the top five.
Shortly before his death, he had recorded a new album, Final Touches . In 1999, Twitty was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame . In 2008 he received the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music . The American cartoon series Family Guy occasionally shows music videos by Twitty.
