Loretta Lynn
Loretta Lynn (* 14. April 1932 as Loretta Webb in Butcher Hollow, Johnson County , Kentucky ) is one of the most successful American Country - singers and - songwriter of the 1960s and 1970s. Between 1960 and 2000 she reached nearly 80 hits in the US country charts. Lynn has received 17 Grammy nominations and three awards. In addition, she was also honored for her life's work. According to the RIAA's gold and platinum awards , Lynn has sold over four million records in the United States alone.
Life
Private life
Loretta Lynn was born in 1932 in a settlement belonging to the village of Van Lear in the Appalachian Mountains, the daughter of miner Ted Webb and his wife Clara. On January 10, 1948, at the age of 15, she married the 21-year-old Oliver Vanetta Lynn Jr., called "Mooney" or "Doolittle", (born August 27, 1926 in Butcher Hollow, † August 22, 1996 in Hurricane Mills , Tennessee).
In an effort to escape the inevitable work in the coal mines, the couple first moved to Custer, Washington . The Lynns had six children:
- Betty Sue, born November 26, 1948, † July 29, 2013
- Jack Benny, born December 7, 1949, † July 24, 1984
- Clara Marie (Cissie), March 4, 1951
- Ernest Ray, born April 12, 1959
- Peggy Jean and Patsy Eileen (twins), born June 3, 1964
Clara Marie (Cissie) is a successful country singer, also the twins Peggy Jean and Patsy Eileen, who perform under the name The Lynns. Patsy Eileen was named after Loretta's friend Patsy Cline , who was killed in a plane crash. Lynn's younger sister, Crystal Gayle, is also a well-known country singer, and the two are cousins of country singer Patty Loveless .
Career
In 1961 Loretta Lynn started her singing career; In 1962 she made her first appearance in the Grand Ole Opry . Lynn released 70 albums (17 of which reached number 1 on the charts) and had 27 number 1 hit singles . She wrote more than 160 songs. Her first single Honky Tonk Girl reached number 14 on Billboard Hot Country Songs . Her first number 1 song was Don't Come Home a Drinkin '(With Lovin' on Your Mind) . From 1964 she sang some successful duets with Ernest Tubb and released three LPs with him. 1971 began an even more successful collaboration with Conway Twitty , which brought them several awards and five number one hits in the C&W charts. In 1972, Lynn became the first woman to receive the CMA Entertainer of the Year award. The Academy of Country Music named Lynn "Artist of the Decade" in the 1970s . In 1977 she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
Loretta Lynn authored two autobiographies: Coal Miner's Daughter and Still Woman Enough . The first was made into a film in 1980 with Sissy Spacek , who won the Oscar for best actress . In Germany the film ran under the title Nashville Lady . Lynn had a surprising comeback in 2004 with the album Van Lear Rose ( Interscope / Universal Music ), which was created in collaboration with Jack White of the White Stripes . In 2007, Lynn and other country stars brought out the album Anchored in Love in honor of June Carter Cash , on which she sings the song Wildwood Flower . In the same year she recorded the song Will You Visit Me on Sunday with Marty Stuart .
Different artists used their 50th stage anniversary in 2010 as an occasion for tribute albums. Coal Miner's Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn included Lynn renditions by other country artists such as Miranda Lambert , Gretchen Wilson , Steve Earle , Martina McBride , Lucinda Williams and Lee Ann Womack . Another tribute release was the album Butcher Holler - A Tribute to Loretta Lynn by Eilen Jewell , which contained a mixture of well-known and lesser-known Loretta Lynn pieces. In 2015, the Rolling Stone listed Lynn at number 76 of the 100 best songwriters of all time .
In May 2017, Lynn suffered a stroke. After her recovery, she first appeared again in October of the same year for a laudation in honor of Alan Jackson on his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame . In January 2018, she broke her hip in a fall and postponed the release of a planned new album. This finally appeared after Lynn's recovery in September 2018 and immediately entered the top 10 of the country charts.
Discography
Loretta Lynn's discography includes 55 studio albums, 15 compilation albums, 88 singles and seven music videos.
