Lee Ann Womack (born August 19, 1966 in Jacksonville , Texas ) is an American country singer and songwriter.

Beginnings

Lee Ann's father worked part time as a disc jockey for a local radio station. She often accompanied him to the studio and participated in the selection of records. Her favorites were country musicians like Bob Wills and Ray Price . She later also gave Dolly Parton , Tammy Wynette and George Jones as influences on her work. After graduating from high school, she went to college to study music. She gained her first musical experience as a member of the college band.

She later moved to Nashville Belmont University. She completed an internship in the A&R department (Artists & Repertoire) of the MCA label. While still at university, she married Jason Sellers , who would later make a career himself. The marriage, which resulted in a child, lasted only a few years.

Career

Womack began writing songs and made appearances on the Nashville club scene. In 1995 she was hired by the music publisher Tree Publishing . She wrote songs for Bill Anderson , Ricky Skaggs and others. In 1996 she received a record deal from Decca . Her debut album Lee Ann Womack , produced by Mark Wright , was released a year later . The album became an instant hit. The decoupled single The Fool advanced to number two on the country charts. The Academy of Country Music honored her as the best young singer. In 1999 she married for the second time and had a second daughter.

In early 1999, Decca Records withdrew from the country business and Lee Ann Womack was taken over by parent company MCA. In the same year the album I Hope You Dance was created . The single of the same name reached number one on the country charts and was both CMA and ACM "Single of the Year" and "Song of the Year". She received other awards, including a Grammy , a year later for the duet Mendocino County Line sung with Willie Nelson . Musically it developed more and more from traditional country to pop music . As a result, the album Something Worth Leaving Behind fell short of sales expectations despite extensive promotion . Only the return to more traditional sounds on There's More Where That Came From brought the hoped-for commercial success again. The album received very good reviews and won the CMA Award for "Best Album of the Year". It was only the fourth time that a woman in this category was able to take home the trophy. In October 2008, their seventh album Call Me Crazy was released on MCA. She also made her movie debut as an actress in the film Noble Things .

It took six years until the next album.
