Jacksonville is a city in Cherokee County in the US state of Texas .
geography
The city is located at the intersection of US Highway 69 with US Highway 79 in northeast Cherokee County in east Texas and has a total area of 36.6 km² without any significant water surface. Lake Jacksonville , which was dammed up in 1957 for water supply, but also offers numerous recreational opportunities , lies about three miles to the southwest, no longer in the municipality .
history
The first settlement began in 1847 on the east bank of Gum Creek . Jackson Smith built a house and a forge here and also became postmaster of the Gum Creek Post Office a year later . It was through him and another settler named Jackson that the name Jacksonville was formed for the place in 1850. The International Great Northern Railroad moved its tracks a few kilometers away in 1872 and in the same year most residents moved to the vicinity of the railway line and took over the place name.

According to the 2000 census, 13,868 people lived here in 4,882 households and 3,358 families. The population density was 378.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 62.60% White, 21.70% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 12.72% other ethnic groups. About 1.69% were mixed race and 23.04% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,882 households, 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.5% of them were married couples living together. 17.9% were single mothers and 31.2% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.28 people.
29.2% of the population were under 18 years old, 12.1% 18 to 24, 25.2% 25 to 44, 17.9% 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 89.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 25,800 USD , and the median income for a family 31,176 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,650 versus $ 19,375 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,541. 23.1% of the population and 19.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 29.0% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.7% were 65 or older.
