Jasper is a city and seat of the county seat of Jasper County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located almost in the far east of Texas on US Highways 96 and 190 , is about 25 km from Louisiana and has a total area of 26.9 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.
history
The place was named after William Jasper , a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

According to the 2000 census, 8,247 people lived here in 2,888 households and 1,992 families. The population density was 307.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 48.26% White, 43.91% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 5.18% other ethnic groups. About 1.49% were mixed race and 8.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,888 households, 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.7% of these were married couples living together. 20.3% were single mothers and 31.0% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.14.
26.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7% 18 to 24, 28.1% 25 to 44, 20.6% 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 98.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.5 men.
