June Carter Cash
Valerie June Carter Cash (born June 23, 1929 in Maces Springs , Virginia , † May 15, 2003 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country singer, songwriter and the wife of Johnny Cash .
Life
The daughter of Ezra and Maybelle Carter was a member of the traditional Carter Family and played country music at the age of ten. After the show family separated in 1943, briefly worked as an actress, Carter soon returned to music. On stage she often played autoharp and also the banjo and guitar .
In the 1950s she was married to country musician Carl Smith . The daughter Carlene Carter emerged from the marriage and was able to continue the successful family tradition in the third generation in the 1970s and 80s. In November 1957 June Carter married the police officer and stock car driver Edwin "Rip" Nix. Their daughter Rozanna Lea (Rosie) was born in 1958 and died in October 2003 of carbon monoxide poisoning .
From 1961 June Carter went on tour with Johnny Cash . In April 1963 Cash brought out the song Ring of Fire , which in its version - underlaid with the typical mariachi trumpets - became a world hit. The song was written in 1962 by Merle Kilgore and June Carter, who described Cash's alcohol and pill addiction and her forbidden love for him. Cash and Carter were married to other partners at the time, but had long been in love. After June Carter long refused to marry him because of Cash's addiction, she accepted his marriage proposal on February 22, 1968, which he made to her on stage during a concert in Ontario , Canada . They were married on March 1, 1968 in Franklin, Kentucky . Their son John Carter Cash was born in 1970.
In addition to working with Cash, she continued to perform with her sisters and continued her solo career. In 1975 she released her solo debut with Appalachian Pride . In 1983, she and Cash stood in front of the camera for the feature film Murder in the Wrong District . She worked as an actress a few more times, mostly at the side of her husband, for example in several episodes of the series Dr. Quinn - a passionate doctor .
In 2000 she received a Grammy for Press On in the category "Best Traditional Folk Album" and in 2004 for the posthumously released album Wildwood Flower and for Keep on the Sunny Side in the category "Best Female Country Vocal Performance". June Carter Cash died on May 15, 2003 at the age of 73 from complications from heart valve surgery .
