Carl Smith
Carl Smith (born March 15, 1927 in Maynardville , Tennessee , † January 16, 2010 in Nashville , Tennessee) was an American country singer .
Life
Beginnings
Smith is from the same area as Roy Acuff , one of the great country stars of the 1940s. With the first self-earned money he bought a guitar. He made his first radio appearances at WROL in Knoxville . After serving in the US Navy for a year and a half, he initially returned to WROL. In 1948 he worked as a bassist for Skeets Williamson and Molly O'Day . A year later he moved to Nashville to the WSM station there. Shortly thereafter, he was signed by the Grand Ole Opry .
Career
In 1950, Smith received a record deal from Columbia Records . His second single, Let's Live a Little , made it to number 2 on the country charts in 1951. The singer, who sings honky tonk despite his rather soft voice , had other successes in the same year, including his first number one hit in the country charts with Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way . It was the beginning of a long streak of success; in the 1950s he had 31 top ten placements.
In 1952 he married from the famous Carter Family coming June Carter , with whom he, among others, the duet Times A-Wastin ' sang. From the divorced after four years of marriage, another country singer emerged with Carlene Carter ; June Carter later married Johnny Cash . In 1956, Smith ended his engagement at the Grand Ole Opry and moved to California to take on a few film roles. He joined the Philipp Morris Country Music Show , which toured the United States on an eighteen month tour. In 1957 he married the country singer Goldie Hill , with whom he had three children. Hill died of cancer in February 2005.
In the sixties, the sales of his records gradually decreased, although he was still regularly represented in the charts. In Canada, “Mr. Country ”its own television show, Carl Smith's Country Music Hall . In 1975 he switched to a smaller label. Here he played a few more unsuccessful singles before retiring from the music business in 1977. Carl Smith had been forgotten, not least because of his scandal-free life. He was rarely on stage, like at a benefit concert in 1983. In 2003 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame .
