Deep Blues: A Musical Pilgrimage to the Crossroads is a British documentary directed by music critic Robert Palmer . The film was shot in 1990 in Memphis (Tennessee) , the Mississippi Delta and the neighboring hill country; it documents the origins of the Delta Blues .

Directed by Robert Mugge, the film was initiated and produced by David A. Stewart on the basis of Palmer's book "Deep Blues: A Musical and Cultural History of the Mississippi Delta" from 1981. The film was released in 1991 the following year on DVD. The soundtrack was also released on CD.

Musicians who appear in the film include Booba Barnes , RL Burnside , Jessie Mae Hemphill with Napoleon Strickland and Abe Young , Big Jack Johnson , Junior Kimbrough with Little Joe Ayers and Calvin Jackson , Booker T. Laury , Jack Owens , Lonnie Pitchford , Bud Spiers and Wade Walton .
