Reginald Veal

Reginald Veal (* 5. November 1963 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American double bassist of the Modern Jazz . He plays "solos with excellent dramaturgic construction" and is considered a reliable companion and overall as a potential "successor to Ray Brown ."

Live and act

Veal grew up in New Orleans , began taking piano lessons from the age of eight and began playing the electric bass in his father's gospel group . He studied at Southern University in Baton Rouge with Alvin Batiste . There he switched to the double bass. He also played the trombone in marching bands . As a bass player he worked in bands around Ellis Marsalis , with whom he was in Southeast Asia, and from 1986 also with Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison . Between 1987 and 1993 he was a member of the band of Wynton Marsalis , with whom he toured worldwide, and was also involved in productions of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra . He then played with Branford Marsalis and Elvin Jones , with whom he also toured internationally. In 1997 he joined Eric Reed's trio . He has also been involved in the recordings of Dianne Reeves and Michael White and numerous Young Lions such as Leroy Jones , Marcus Roberts , Nicholas Payton , Courtney Pine , Wycliffe Gordon , Mark Whitfield , Herlin Riley and the Tough Young Tenors .
