Herlin Riley (* 15. February 1957 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz - drummer and bandleader.

Live and act

Herlin Riley grew up in a musical family in New Orleans and began playing drums at the age of three. He later also studied trumpet during high school but focused on drums. From 1984 to 1987 Riley was a member of Ahmad Jamal's band ; In 1988 he joined the band of Wynton Marsalis - as the successor to Jeff Tain Watts - with whom he regularly toured and made recordings such as The Majesty of the Blues (1988), Blue Interlude (1992) and Blood on the Fields (1994) . Riley stayed with Marsalis until 1994; he also worked with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He also worked on recordings by Marcus Roberts , Dr. John , Harry Connick, Jr. , George Benson , Bennie Wallace and Mark Whitfield with. He has also appeared in numerous theater shows and performances, such as One Mo 'Time and Satchmo: America's Musical Legend .

In 2000 the album Watch What We're Doing was released on the Criss Cross Label, with Ryan Kisor , Wycliffe Gordon , Victor Goines , Furid Barron and Rodney Whitaker , followed by the album Cream of the Crescent (Criss Cross, 2004) with Wynton Marsalis, Victor Goines and Wycliffe Gordon.

Riley is a regular at Jazz at Lincoln Center , and as a percussion teacher in the jazz study program at the Bees School of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois .
