Michael White (also Dr. Michael White , born November 29, 1954 in New Orleans ) is an American clarinetist of old-time jazz .

Live and act

White comes from a family of musicians; His ancestors included the jazz bassist Papa John Joseph and the clarinetist Willie "Kaiser" Joseph, about whom he initially knew little. He was influenced by an aunt who played classical clarinet. White first studied Spanish and played with Don Paulin (1975), the Young Tuxedo Brass Band (1979) and in the Preservation Hall with Kid Sheik Cola . He also appeared on the show One Mo 'Time . He completed his foreign language studies with a doctorate and founded his own trio and in 1981 the Liberty Jazz Band , then The New Orleans Hot Seven . He toured Europe and Japan several times and also performed at the Village Vanguard . Wynton Marsalis involved him in his recordings for The Majesty of the Blues (1989).

White teaches Spanish and African-American music at Xavier University of Louisiana . In the United States, he is a media advocate for traditional jazz because of his academic position. According to Digby Fairweather, he is considered a central figure in the newer New Orleans Revival . His historical collection on New Orleans jazz, a. a. with sheet music by Jelly Roll Morton , was destroyed in the floods after Hurricane Katrina .
