Gregory Vaughn "Gregg" Stafford (* 1947 in New Orleans ) is an American trumpeter , singer and band leader of hot jazz . He is one of the younger musicians who are firmly rooted in the tradition of New Orleans jazz .

Live and act

Stafford, a relative of Henry Red Allen , grew up in the Central City of New Orleans, where he often watched the street parades; he also sang in church. During school he started playing the trumpet after he and his teacher convinced his mother. In the fall of 1970 he was inducted into the Gibson Brass Band by Johnny Wimberley. A year later, Danny Barker brought him into the Young Fairview Christian Church Brass band , which at the time included musicians such as Leroy Jones , Anthony Lacen, Darryl Adams, Lucien and Charles Barbarin and Herlin Riley . Christmas 1972, Herman Sherman brought him to the Young Tuxedo Brass Band , which he took over after Sherman's death in 1984. Since 1973 he was also a member of the Olympia Brass Band . When Leroy Jones founded his own Hurricane Brass Band in 1974 , Gregg also played there and took part in their recordings (but is listed there as Gregg Vaughn).

With most of these street bands , some of which he also helped out on the sousaphone and bass drum , he toured the United States as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. Danny Barker and Chester Zardis also brought him into their combos . In 1991 he took over the band from Kid Sheik in the Preservation Hall . As a guest musician, he played in numerous countries, including with the Danish New Orleans Delight . As a band leader, he has recorded several albums for Jazz Crusade since 1998 and is also featured on recordings with Toronto's Hot Five Jazzmakers . He was also one of Michael White's bands ( Jazz from the Soul of New Orleans , Dancing in the Sky , Blue Crescent ). Between 1977 and 2011 he was involved in 30 recording sessions in the field of jazz.
