Big Bill Bissonnette (born February 5, 1937 in Bridgeport (Connecticut) ; † June 26, 2018 ) was an American jazz musician ( trombone , drums , also vocals ), who was known as a music producer and founder of the Jazz Crusade label as a promoter of New Orleans Jazz stood out .

Big Bill Bissonnette began his career as a music promoter promoting New Orleans musicians who cultivated the New Orleans jazz tradition. In the early 1960s he founded the record label Jazz Crusade Records ; The first recordings were made in 1962 with the Easy Riders Jazz Band , which he led and played the trombone in. In total, over 100 sessions with local musicians appeared on his label; he is involved as a trombonist or drummer for around half, as in recordings with Kid Thomas Valentine / Emanuel Paul , Alcide Pavageau , Captain John Handy , Jim Robinson , Kid Sheik Cola , George Lewis , Sammy Rimmington , Punch Miller and with Polo Barnes / Alvin Alcorn / Alex Bigard .

In the 1990s, Bissonnette directed his label to archiving British trad jazz; he later sold the catalog to UpBeat Records. In his later years he toured with "Tuba Fats" Lacen in Big Bill Bissonnette's International Jazz Band and continued to make recordings such as Live in Lyon! (Jazzogie, 1985) and I Believe I Hear That Trambone Moan (1986). In 1987 he performed in Germany with the Vieux Carre Jazz Band , in 1993 with Milton Batiste ’s Zoo Band in New Orleans and with Sammy Rimmington in Denmark. In 1992 he published a book about his early career called Jazz Crusade: The Inside Story of the Great New Orleans Jazz Revival of the 1960’s . In the field of jazz he was involved in 84 recording sessions between 1962 and 2004, most recently with The French Preservation New Orleans Jazz Band ( Jumpin 'Ii Irigny - Vol. 1 ). In addition to his Jazz Crusade label, recordings in which he was involved also appeared on the GHB Records label. In the opinion of Scott Yanow , Bissonnette's playing on the trombone is simple, but is characterized by exuberance, coupled with a lot of inventiveness.
