Captain John Handy (born June 24, 1900 in Pass Christian , Mississippi , † January 12, 1971 in New York City ) was an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , clarinet ). Cellphone's music was rooted in New Orleans Jazz , into which he also added elements of rhythm and blues .

Live and act

Handy played in various local bands in New Orleans since the 1920s before founding his Louisiana Shakers , with whom he played at La Vida Dance Hall and also toured regionally. In 1928 he switched to the alto saxophone. In the 1960s he performed regularly with trumpeter Kid Sheik Cola's band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band .

During the New Orleans Revival he recorded for GHB Records, RCA and Jazz Crusade. He now played in the December Band and came to Europe with various bands and became internationally known. In 1970 he performed with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Newport Jazz Festival and had a highly acclaimed performance. According to Scott Yanow , he was "one of the top New Orleans jazz musicians in the 1960s"
