Leroy Jones
Leroy Jones (born February 20, 1958 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz trumpeter . According to Digby Fairweather , he is "one of the most interesting and creativeists among the newer African American traditionalists" of jazz.
Live and act
Jones started playing the trumpet at the age of ten and switched to the cornet in 1971 . In the same year he took over the leadership of the Marching Band organized by Danny Barker of the Fairview Baptist Church , which he then continued after problems with the musicians' union together with Gregory Davis (from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band ) as the Hurricane Brass Band . He also played in the St. Augustine High School Band . In 1974 he received a scholarship to the Loyola Music Conservatory in his hometown, which he only attended for half a year before touring Canada with Eddie Vinson and then performing with Della Reese . He also worked with Leroy Bates (1977-1978) and Hollis Carmouche (1978-1980) and other bands before he founded his own quintet New Orleans Finest in 1980 ; he also belonged to the Tuxedo Brass Band and the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble . Guest performances in the Netherlands (1982) and in Singapore (1985-1986) followed. In 1991 Jones became a member of Harry Connick's Big Band . Since then he has gained international renown and was given the opportunity to release his debut album in 1994. He toured internationally with his own band and recorded other albums. He also played with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band , with Dr. John and with Susanne Riemer .
