Nikolaus Köppen
Nikolaus Köppen (born August 7, 1668 in Wolgast , † April 14, 1739 in Greifswald ) was a German professor of oriental languages .
Life
Nikolaus Köppen was the son of Emanuel Köppen, registrar at the Wolgast court court , and his wife Emerentia Rose. Because of military unrest, his mother first moved with him to Greifswald and then to Stralsund . There Köppen went to the city high school. The father died in 1679. After attending the Greifswald city school , Köppen came to the University of Greifswald in 1685 . He learned the ancient languages from Heinrich Brandanus Gebhardi and theology from Jakob Henning and Nikolaus Dassow. Köppen then went to Wittenberg and in 1692 to Leipzig and Halle .
In 1693 Köppen received his doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty in Greifswald. He was then tutor to Alexander Caroc for two years .
He then went to Hamburg to see Johann Friedrich Mayer . With Esdras Edzardus and Martin Murray he devoted himself to rabbinical studies.
Returned to Greifswald via Kiel , Köppen was from King Karl XII. Appointed associate professor of philosophy in 1699. In 1704 he disputed under Johann Friedrich Mayer and became a baccalaureus in theology.
During the occupation of Swedish Pomerania by Denmark , the Danish King Frederick IV appointed him full professor for oriental languages in 1718.
In 1727 Köppen married Christina Dorothea Helwig, the daughter of Professor Christoph Helwig . The marriage remained childless.
