Life

Joachim Andreas Helwig was the son of Christoph Helwig (1642–1690) and Anna Regina Heune. After private lessons with Greifswald university teachers, he was enrolled at the University of Greifswald in 1694 .

His teachers included Johann Philipp Palthen , Theodor Horn and Theodor Pyl . In 1699 Helwig went to Wittenberg and turned to the study of law.

In Leipzig he heard from Bartholomäus Leonhard von Schwendendörffer , August Quirinus Rivinus and Lüder Mencke . In Halle he heard from Samuel Stryk , Christian Thomasius , Heinrich von Bode , Johann Franz Budde and Christoph Cellarius .

In Jena he studied a. a. with Burkhard Gotthelf Struve and Johann Philipp Slevogt .

In 1701 Helwig became the private teacher of Count Erasmus Ernst von Küssow in Stettin and moved with him to the University of Greifswald, where he himself held several colleges and at the same time ran a law firm. He was appointed adjunct at the Greifswald court and a short time later appointed royal lawyer in military matters to Stettin.

After the conquest of Stettin in the Great Northern War, Helwig moved to Stralsund , where he was under the command of Karl Gustav Düker for almost three years . After the conquest of Stralsund in 1716, he went back to Greifswald and gave private lessons. In 1722 Helwig was appointed to a legal professorship here.

In the following year he received his doctorate and married Christina Catharina von Blixen , who outlived him by at least 10 years, but the marriage had no children. In 1724 Helwig was appointed assessor at the royal court, whose director he then became in 1736.
