life and work

Johann Philipp Slevogt was born in Jena as the son of the professor of the Greek and Hebrew languages Paul Slevogt . First he studied in Helmstedt under Hermann Conring and then in Jena under Johann Strauch and Johann Schilter jurisprudence, in order to finally combine this study with philosophy and philology . Since 1674 he operated as a doctor jur. an attorney. In addition, he prepared himself in private lectures and disputations. In 1680 he was appointed as an extraordinary teacher of rights and a full teacher of morals and tried in his speech "De philosophia iurisconsultorum" to derive a connection between the two subject areas.

As early as the next year he was given a full professorship in law in Jena. He devoted himself exclusively to his field and deepened his knowledge, so that in 1695 he succeeded Nikolaus Christoph Freiherr von Lyncker and became the first assessor at the court , first professor and full professor, also on the Schöppenstuhl . At the age of 70 he was appointed by the Saxon dukes as their joint councilor. Johann Philipp Slevogt died on January 7, 1727 at the age of 78 in Jena. Slevogt also took part in the organizational tasks of the Salana and was Rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters 1687, 1690, 1698, 1709, 1719 .

His writings dealt with jurisprudence in a wide variety of specialist areas, Ernst Landsberg ascribes particular importance to canon law .
