Paul Slevogt (also: Schlevogt ; born April 29, 1596 in Possendorf , today Weimar ; † June 22, 1655 in Jena ) was a German philologist.

Life

The son of Martin Slevogt († 1622) and Anna Sundthausen had gone through several schools in different places. Coming from Weimar, he enrolled at the University of Jena in 1615 , where, after studying philosophical sciences, he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in 1620 . He then held private lectures in Jena, became vice principal of the Martin School in Braunschweig in 1621 and received the poet's crown from Otto Melander in 1622 . Since he had impressed the Saxon ruling house with a trial sermon in Weimar, he returned to Jena in 1624 and in 1625 became professor of Greek and Hebrew at the Jena University.

He had also been suggested a theological professorship, which he refused and nevertheless took part in the church visitation carried out in 1650. When Daniel Stahl died, he was also given the professorship of logic and metaphysics in 1654. In this office, however, he was no longer able to develop because he suffered a stroke on August 28, 1654 and died after almost a year from another stroke. Slevogt also took part in the organizational tasks of the Jena University. He was dean of the faculty of philosophy several times and rector of the Alma Mater three times in the summer semesters of 1633, 1643 and 1649 . His body was buried on June 25, 1655 in the city ​​church of Jena .

Slevogt was married twice. From his marriage in Jena in 1627 with Ursula Freyer (* 1608 in Jena; † 12 May 1636 ibid.), The daughter of the municipal syndic Wolfgang Freyer (* 1578 in Buttstädt; † 1634 in Jena) and his wife Ursula Hübner (* 1585 in Jena; † 1612 ibid.), the granddaughter of the mayor Andreas Huebner, had three sons and a daughter.
