Burkhard Gotthelf Struve (born May 26, 1671 in Weimar , † May 25, 1738 in Jena ) was a German polyhistor and librarian .

Life

Struve was a son of the lawyer Georg Adam Struve from his second marriage to Susanne Berlich (* 1647 in Jena, † January 22, 1699 ibid.). At the age of 16, Struve enrolled at the University of Jena for philosophy, politics, history and law. A few semesters later, he moved to the University of Frankfurt / Oder with the same combination of subjects .

From 1691 he stayed in Meiningen because of language studies . After successfully completing his studies, Struve got a job at the Jena University Library as a librarian. His reputation as a historian was extraordinary and he shaped some students with his teaching style. The geographer and polymath Johann Gottfried Gregorii alias Melissantes later called him his most loyal teacher in history .

In 1704 Struve advanced to professor for history in Jena. From 1730 he taught constitutional and feudal law there and was appointed councilor by his employer. Struve also took part in the organizational tasks of the Jenaer Salana and was Rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters 1712, 1720 and 1732 .

Honors

In 1948, the Adlergasse in Lobeda was renamed Struvestraße.
