Baza is a Spanish city in the province of Granada in Andalusia ( Spain ) at 844 msnm north of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park .
history
The city goes back to the Iberian settlement Basti . During excavations on July 22, 1971, an important find Iberian sculpture was made: the Dama de Baza from the 4th century BC. The original sculpture is exhibited in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional de España in Madrid . There is a replica in the Archaeological Museum of Baza .
Under the Romans the city was an important trading center and under the Moors it was one of the centers of silk manufacture .
After the Reconquista (recapture of the areas of Spain held by Muslim rulers by the Catholic Monarchs ), the city lost its importance and the Moorish Alcazaba (fortress) was largely destroyed by earthquakes.
Attractions
Like the better-known Guadix, Baza has a quarter with caves . The center of the city is the Plaza Mayor, where the Renaissance church of Santa María can be found. The church was built on the ruins of the Arab mezquita (mosque), the main plateresque door attributed to Diego de Siloé is particularly noteworthy . Opposite is the small archaeological museum with a copy of the "Dama de Baza".
Other worthwhile sights are the Baños Arabes, Moorish baths from the 10th century and the Palacio de los Enríquez, a 16th century Mudejar- style house.
