Moclín and its castle.

Moclín is a place in the Andalusian province of Granada in southern Spain , about 30 km from Granada . The village with its castle on a hilltop can be seen from Granada (specifically from the Albaicín ).

geography

Moclín is located on a mountain in the Comarca de Loja, above the village of Olívares . The place traditionally lives from the cultivation of wheat and olives , but is now trying to become a destination for landscape and hiking tourism due to its spectacular landscape (the Garganta del Gollizno through which the Río Velillos flows).

history

Early evidence of human presence ( Paleolithic painting ) can be found in the Cueva de Malalmuerzo cave .

From individual authors Moclín is with the by 'Abdallāh ibn Buluggīn described castle Belillos, which together with troops of Alfonso VI. and the 'Abbādids of Seville, erected in the territory of the Taifa of Granada. The reason for this assumption is the proximity of the Velillos river.

What is certain, however, is the later role of Moclín Castle in the defense system of the Naṣrid Emirate of Granada , which earned the castle titles such as the Shield of Granada or the Key to the Vega .

In 1280, the site was the scene of a battle that went down in Spanish history as the disaster of Moclín , with Castile under Alfonso X and the Santiagoorden on one side and the Sultanate of Granada on the other.

In 1486 the place was conquered by the Christians in connection with the Guerra de Granada (1482-1492) after the Christians managed to blow up the powder tower of the castle. This was a carving of the choir stalls of the Cathedral of Toledo held.

Attractions

Moclín is a small place. The castle with its double wall ring is a sight. In the lower part of the castle is the Cristo del Paño church. From Moclín you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Vega de Granada with the Sierra Nevada in the background.
