Location of the municipality | ||
Pampaneira is a municipality in the Spanish province of Granada , in the Alpujarras mountain region , on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada .
The place is about 1060 meters above sea level in the gorge of the Rio Poqueira , a tributary of the Rio Guadalfeo . Together with the villages of Capileira and Bubión further north, the place was declared a Conjunto histórico-artístico .
The Moorish Pampaneira has already won several awards for its townscape: The white, cube-shaped houses with flat roofs stretch up the slopes in terraces and are connected by narrow, steep streets. In the barren mountain region, the residents were dependent on a sophisticated irrigation system and terrace management . The landscape in the south of the Sierra Nevada, favored by the mild Mediterranean climate, was settled by the Berbers as early as the 8th century and formed the last retreat for the Moors in Spain in the 16th century. After the Moriscos were expelled , the area was repopulated by Christians from what is now the province of León and Galicia .
Today Pampaneira is the starting point for hikes in the Alpujarras, tourism is an important economic factor. Like many of the surrounding villages, Pampaneira is a weaving center for the production of colored blankets, fabrics and carpets. In addition, numerous small shops sell handicrafts and local culinary specialties as souvenirs . The most important trade fair in the region for handicrafts, agriculture and tourism takes place here every autumn.
