Monachil is a Spanish municipality (municipio) in the province of Granada , Andalusia , in the south of the Vega de Granada . The neighboring municipalities are Huétor Vega, Cenes de la Vega, Pinos Genil, Güéjar Sierra, Dílar, La Zubia and Cájar. The distance to Granada is about 8 km. The municipality includes three places, the village of Monachil, often called Monachil Pueblo, Barrio de la Vega (also called Barrio de Monachil) and Pradollano, where the Sierra Nevada ski station is located; the Alpine World Ski Championships were held there in 1996 .
The name Monachil is derived from the Arabic منستير ( monastir ), a word of Latin origin that means "monastery".
Culture
In the municipality of Monachil there is an archaeological site, Cerro de la Encina , in which remains of the Bronze Age El Argar culture have been found. Some of the finds, along with other objects, are exhibited in the Monachil Archaeological Museum. The La Cortijuela Botanical Garden can also be found in the area .
The village of Monachil is home to a variety of historic buildings, including the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación Church and the Casa de los Señores de Aragón, both from the 17th century.
