Zafarraya is a municipality in the province of Granada in Spain . It has 2137 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).

Site of Neanderthals

In 1983 the remains of Neanderthals were found here in the Cueva del Boquete cave , which, according to a dating by Thomas Higham, are around 45,000 years old.

Earthquake 1884

Church in Zafarraya destroyed by the earthquake

On December 25, the earthquake in Andalusia in 1884 shook large parts of the Axarquía (the eastern part of the province of Málaga) and parts of the province of Granada . A total of 900 people died in the earthquake. Zafarraya and Arenas del Rey , in the immediate vicinity of which was the epicenter of the quake, were completely destroyed.
