Benalúa (formerly known as Benalúa de Guadix ) is a Spanish municipality in the Andalusian province of Granada . Benalúa is located on the Sierra Nevada and borders the communities of Fonelas and Purullena , Guadix is also within sight . Nearby towns are Bejarin , Cortes y Graena and Marchal .

The municipality of Benalúa is located in the middle of the Hoya de Guadix , a natural plateau at the confluence of the Fardes and Guadix rivers . The village has an average altitude of 886 m and reaches the highest point on the 930 m high Kabila mountain.

history

During excavations, finds of stone tools confirmed the first settlements in the Neolithic Age (archaeological site "Solana del Zamborino"). The finds of ceramic shards in the excavation site Cerro del Gallo have also shown that the population in the area of ​​today's city of Benalúa increased during the time of the El Argar culture .

Due to its proximity to Via Augusta , Benalúa developed into a Pagus Minor during Roman times . The importance of the Roman road as an important trade route let the population increase further. It was not until the Moors gave it its current name, the origin of which is not clear: one possible interpretation is “Ben-Allah” (City of God), the other “Ben-al-Guad” (near the rivers). After the arrival of the Moors, Benalúa served mainly as a fortress and to defend the Comarca Guadix ; at the time it consisted of caves, towers and some homesteads. The existing irrigation systems meant that the region developed into an arable farming area that gradually attracted more and more settlers.
