Diezma is a Spanish municipality in the province of Granada , about 40 km northeast of Granada .

The area of ​​the municipality is 42 km². About 945 Diezmeros (Spanish name for residents) live in Diezma.

Diezma is located at 1,233 meters above sea level near the motorway between Guadix and Granada, and the most striking features of its town center are the church of Santo Cristo de la Fe, with a tower in the neo-Mudejar style, and the residential palace of the Marquis of Diezma (18th century ). Outside the center of the town there is a place called Los Bañuelos , where the thermal springs, which are very popular with the locals, arise, and the Cueva del Agua ( water cave ), a natural grotto with formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

history

The name of the place is related to the tithes ( diezmos ), which were previously paid to the church for agricultural income; the Arabs called him Dexme, certainly a derivative of the Visigoth place name. However, its history goes back to earlier times, as it was an enclave on the Roman Via Augusta that connected Acci with Iliberis.

It was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1490 and has been recognized as a homestead since 1530. The Crown of Castile sold him to Luis Guiral (1536), who assumed the title of Majorate of Diezma.

Specialties

Specialties are partridge stews, game dishes and roast lamb. The so-called rosquillos (wreath pastries sprinkled with sugar), homemade rice and of course gazpacho are also highly recommended.
