Fuente Vaqueros (also called La Fuente ) is a Spanish city in the west of the Vega de Granada , Granada province , Andalusia and, as part of the Granada metro area, borders the municipalities of Santa Fe , Chauchina , Cijuela , Láchar and Pinos Puente . The Genil flows through the urban area.
history
Like many other places in the Vega de Granada , Fuente Vaqueros had its heyday during the rule of the Nasrid rulers . After the Reconquista in 1492, the place suffered due to the expulsion of the Moors and the later settlement by colonists from other regions.
In 1813 the Cortes of Cadiz transferred part of the area to the Duke of Wellington in recognition of his achievements during the Spanish War of Independence against the French occupiers. Until 1940, Wellington's descendants slowly sold their Spanish properties to the farmers who worked there.
Culture
Federico García Lorca , one of the most important Spanish authors of the 20th century, was born here. This fact has a strong impact on culture and tourism in the municipality. There are various memorial sites and a small museum in the house where he was born, which is run by the Patronato Cultural Federico García Lorca. The former Calle de la Iglesia has been named after him since 1931 .
gastronomy
The local cuisine is determined by the vegetables grown here: green asparagus, potatoes and spinach. The regional specialties include the patatas en gloria , which are prepared with oil and vinegar.
