history

Huéscar was founded in 1324 by King Ismail I as a defensive enclave and formed one of the northern borders of the Kingdom of Granada with the Kingdom of Castile. The city became of particular importance to the Church and to the kings of Spain after the Reconquest led by the Catholic Kings. Huéscar became part of the Duchy of Alba and until 1953 the Archdiocese of Toledo. The collegiate church "Colegiata de Santa María", the church of Santiago, several monasteries and elegant mansions date from this period.
