Cogollos Vega is a village and a municipality in Andalusia , which is 14 kilometers north of Granada in the province of Granada.

The first provable mentions can be dated to the year 1363. Today there are 2031 people, mostly of Spanish descent, but there is still a small part of the Gitanos (Gypsies) population.

The village is characterized primarily by the cultivation of olives . Every year around 8% of Spanish olive oil production is supplied from there.

Cogollos Vega

In the 1960s , a community of farmers , a cooperativa, was founded under the leadership of José Martín Martinez . With the help of the Cooperativa, every farmer receives a significantly higher yield even with poor harvests, as the total yield is distributed equally by all members.

In the past, the caliph's route ( Ruta del Califato ) ran along the village. Even today, a number of signs point to this.

Due to the proximity of the Peñon de la Mata mountain range to the Sierra Elvira, several observation towers were erected in the mountains in the time of the Moors, which can still be admired today. The Arab baths also date from this period.

In addition, it is one of the few villages in Andalusia where underground stalactite caves can still be found.

At the end of the Spanish Civil War around 1939 , the last supporters of the monarchy holed up on the Peñón de la Mata , part of the Sierra de Nívar, and tried to defend the crown. Over 3000 soldiers and civilians died on this mountain during these days.

The most famous of all residents was the writer Washington Irving around the years 1829–1831 . His former domicile can still be admired today.
