Chimneys in the Alpujarras.

Busquístar is a municipality in the Spanish province of Granada in southern Andalusia . The place is located at 1,160 m above sea level on the Rio Trevélez in the Alpujarras , one of the mountain regions upstream of the Sierra Nevada in the south. Busquístar had 289 inhabitants on January 1, 2019, whose white-painted houses were built in the Moorish style. They have flat roofs and the typical round chimneys, which are mainly used to dry corn on the cob and bundles of peppers. Tourists will find three small bars, two supermarkets, a bakery and two restaurants in Buquístar. A doctor is present every morning at the health center.

history

The word Alpujarras comes from Arabic and means meadows . The first reports about the Alpujarras have been made since the Arab colonization in 711 by migrating Berbers . They terraced the land and developed a sophisticated irrigation system. In the 13th century, the Nasrids ruling from Granada divided the region into large parishes called Tahas and fortified them with castles and towers. Buquístar belonged to the Taha de Ferreira and from 1499 to the Taha de Orgiva . About 4 km southwest of Buquístar are the remains of a former Moorish settlement and mosque called La Mezquita (German: the mosque). The buildings erected on a mountain around 1,200 m high date from the time between the 8th and 14th centuries and their inhabitants were probably the ancestors of today's population of Busquístar. In the early 20th century, the area around the former mosque was examined for buried treasures. For this purpose excavations were carried out over 20 meters deep. In order to secure the area, it was placed under state protection in 2007 and declared a Sitio Historico de la Alpujarra (German historical site of the Alpujarras).
