El Padul is a municipality in the province of Granada in Spain , 13 kilometers from Granada . Since the discovery of the remains of a mammoth in 2005, the city has also been called Villa del Mamut ('Mammoth Village').

location

El Padul lies at an altitude of 744 m on the edge of the mire of the El Padul valley and is surrounded by the towns of Alhendín , Otura , Dílar , Dúrcal , Villamena , Las Albuñuelas and Jayena .

history

The first record of the place name dates from the 14th century and is found as al-Badul in Ibn al-Ḫaṭīb. However, the toponym seems to go back to Roman times and is metathetically derived from the Latin word for swamp , palus , in the accusative paludem .

  • Roman Road: The remains of an ancient Roman road connecting the cities of Iliberis (Granada) and Sexi (Almuñécar), at Los Molinos
  • Grinding marks can be found not only in Malta , but also in El Padul and Castellar de Meca.
