Motril is a city in the province of Granada in southern Spain . It is located (as the crow flies) about 50 kilometers south of the provincial capital Granada , is a port city on the Mediterranean Sea and has about 60,000 inhabitants.

Motril, Algeciras , Almería , Cádiz and Tarifa have been hot spots for immigration to the EU via the Mediterranean since the Conte I government (Italy) de facto closed Italian ports to migrants from Africa in mid-2018.

On October 2, 2018, the municipality of Torrenueva Costa was newly formed from parts of the city of Motril .
