Maracena is a municipality in the province of Granada in southeastern Spain with 22,116 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is located three kilometers from Granada.

history

Maracena is a former Roman settlement. This is proven not only by the original name Maratiena , which refers to a Roman citizen Maratius , but also by the discovery of a millstone from an oil mill from the 2nd century. This was found during the construction of the Casería de los Titos settlement .

During the Moors , the then Marasana was attacked several times by the Christian rulers, as the immediate location to the neighboring capital Granada was considered to be strategically and technically favorable. Alfonso I besieged the place in 1126. After the conquest of Granada and the annihilation of the Moorish population, the Spaniards settled there, who helped the city to prosperity over the centuries through agriculture, viticulture and tobacco planting.

Worth seeing

• Iglesia de la Encarnación dates back to the 16th century and is dedicated to the Catholic kings of Spain. Inside the Mudejar style building there is a Gothic altarpiece.
