Location of the municipality | ||
Bubión is a municipality in the Alpujarras mountain region in the southern Sierra Nevada in the Spanish province of Granada .
Bubión is located around 1,300 meters above sea level on the Rio Poqueira gorge , a tributary of the Rio Guadalfeo . Together with Capileira in the north and Pampaneira in the south, the place was classified as a Conjunto histórico-artístico . The Moriskan architecture of the places is similar to the construction of the Berber people and consists of whitewashed, cube-shaped houses with flat roofs, which often serve as a terrace for houses above. The surrounding mountain slopes are partially covered by terraces, which are planted with the lemon, orange, almond and mulberry trees introduced by the Moors. The typical division of the places into so-called barrios , into upper, middle and lower village, is traced back to the Moors.
The most important building by Bubión is the village church, built in the 16th century. Its massive tower was used by Abén Humeya's supporters as a refuge and defense against the Spaniards. Another important building is the Villa Turistica , which houses the Tourist Office . It serves the increasing tourism in recent years, which has discovered the region as an attractive hiking area. Despite the altitude, the climate is Mediterranean mild even in winter.
history
Bubión was probably founded in Roman times around the birth of Christ, because remains of Roman burial sites were found in the 19th century. Under the rule of the Moors , the Alpujarras gained a certain importance. It was the last bastion of the Moors on Spanish soil. In the 13th century, Bubión became the capital of the Taha de Poqueira , an area that included the villages of Capileira, Bubion, Pampaneira and the no longer existing Alguastar. In the course of the Morisk uprisings, the residents were on the side of Abén Humeya and fought against Spanish oppression (1569–1571), but were defeated by the Spanish under Juan de Austria . As a result, many Moriscos were forced to move to Castile and Aragon .
