The Río Poqueira is a short mountain river in the Spanish province of Granada . Its source rivers arise in the Sierra Nevada on the highest mountains Mulhacén and Veleta . It crosses the Alpujarras region in a southerly direction, then turns to the southwest and flows into the Río Trevélez , just before it joins the Río Guadalfeo .

The Rio Poqueira is formed by the confluence of the Rio Toril and Rio Naute at an altitude of 1,550 m. In the immediate vicinity is the Central Electrica de Poqueira hydropower plant , the end point of water pipes that are brought down from a height of 2100 m. A little off the beaten track is the abandoned village of Cebadilla, which was built for the construction workers of the power plant. Further south, the river flows through a huge gorge, the Barranco del Rio Poqueira , on the slopes of which the picturesque towns of Capileira , Bubión and Pampaneira are located. The Moors have created numerous irrigation canals during their rule that made the river water for agriculture available. Today the economy of the region is no longer dominated by agriculture, but by tourism.

Frequently used hiking trails lead through the gorge and partly along the banks of the Rio Poqueira, for example from Capileira to the power plant and further along the Rio Toril, as well as from Capileira via Bubión to Pampaneira and back. The course of the river south of Pampaneira is used by canyoning enthusiasts. The time when the snow melts in spring and in summer after heavy rains is particularly popular.
