Beas de Granada is a municipality in the province of Granada , Andalusia , in the east of Vega de Granada . The neighboring municipalities are Huétor Santillán, Quéntar , Dúdar and Granada . The place is located at an altitude of 1017 meters in the Sierra de Beas, within the Sierra de Huétor nature reserve ; the inhabitants are called "Beatos". The distance to Granada is around 20 km. The river Beas, a rather short tributary of the Darro, runs through the village .
Beas was originally a supply and control point along the Roman road to Guadix ; During the reign of the Moors , a fortress was built here, but it no longer exists. After the second Moors uprising , most of the families living here were expelled and replaced by new settlers from northern Spain.
There are various hiking opportunities around Beas as well as a well-known rock formation, "El Fraile", which looks like a monk when viewed from a certain angle; According to local belief, it should point to a fabulous Moorish treasure.
