Quéntar (pronunciation: Kentar , emphasis on the e ) is a southern Spanish mountain village in the province of Granada . The place is 871 m above sea level and has 933 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).
Geographical location
Quéntar is located in a valley that separates the Sierra Nevada Mountains from the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park , 13 kilometers from the city of Granada and on the small river Río Aguas Blancas , which later flows into the Genil . The small town of Tocón (Granada) in the northwest of Quéntar belongs to the catchment area of the municipality .
history
The first documentary mention comes from the 13th century , Quéntar appears there as a district ( Arabic iqlîm ) of the Cora de Elvira with the name Dur . The current name comes from the Arabic name Qaryat Quéntar .
In the course of the reconquest ( Reconquista ) by the Catholic Kings ( Los Reyes Católicos ), the place fell into the hands of the Christians around the same time as the city of Granada and was immediately placed under the rule of the Crown of Castile .
Later, at the time of the uprising of the Moriscos , some rebels fled here from various parts of the mountainous country, which largely destroyed the place by Spanish troops. The subsequent emigration of more than 300 locals left a more or less depopulated area.

There is a reservoir between Quéntar and Tocón, which is fed by the Río Aguas Blancas. Due to the lack of water in the region, it is rarely more than half full. Officially this is called Embalse de Quéntar , but is known by the locals as Pantano . Both words have about the same meaning, namely reservoir or water reservoir .
