history

The place was created in Roman times , as the name suggests, which could be derived from the Latin word portus . Under the Moorish rule, Pórtugos, like the entire region, developed into an economic boom. The residents terraced the land and built a sophisticated irrigation system. The rule of the Moors in Granada was ended by the Reconquista in 1492 . As a result, in the second half of the 16th century under Philip II, the Islamic population was suppressed, and a. through forced conversions and a ban on the Arabic mother tongue. This led to the so-called Morisk Uprising (1568–1572) under the leadership of Abén Humeya . The uprising was bloodily suppressed by Juan de Austria , the brother of the Spanish king, and in October 1570 the last 300 rebels were defeated. Around 80,000 surviving Muslims were expelled from all of eastern Andalusia and the country was repopulated by Christian farmers from northern Spain in return. 72 new settlers also came to Pórtugos, who were promised support and a sexton . After that there is no further information from Pórtugos until the 18th century. The Marquis of Ensenada had the area measured and the first map made. At that time, a medicinal spring, the Fuente Agria , increasingly attracted foreign visitors to the place. The iron-rich, bitter-tasting water is said to have healing properties to this day. Today tourists come to Pórtugos primarily because of the scenic beauty of the Alpujarra and the numerous hiking opportunities with or without a guide.
